There were 36,500 persons living in the area as of January 1, 2003, including 16,500 (45.2%) men and 20,000 (54.8%) women.
The population distribution by age groups is as follows:

- population below employment age 16.7%;
- population above employment age 30.9%.



There are 15,700 urban residents and 20,800 rural residents in the Raion.
